Centaur pics, info, owners etc

Hi

I'm trying to build a database of Centaurs, I'm working with two partial lists, one supplied by Richard of the Cavalier & Chevette Club and David, Barry and Sean of the Crayford owners club.

I've got around 55 cars now identified by reg number and registration date, pictures of around 7

Can you have a sift through your various collections of stuff (show photos etc) so I can add more pictures, or better still if you have one and know the edition number that would be even more helpful.

Here's my car (number 68) and a friends (number 25)

Just been stripped for parts by Mick. (Loobie Maher )

I recognise the car, but all the pics I've seen have the reg number blanked out :(

Even the first three letters would be enough for me to identify if it's on my list.

I've got details of of about 55, car numbers for 4, it's quite a job trying to track them down.

My late father used to work for KJ Motors, he was heavily involved in the production of them.

Nice to see two Centaurs that are original & haven't been "modernised".

I should have bought that red one when it was up for sale earlier this year

I was sorely tempted to buy the red one, even if it was bordering on divorce :D

I couldn't believe it when it was bought by someone in Ireland, even if it did make mine less rare, and his is an original Crayford prototype, the hood mechanism is very different in construction, not that I'm bitter, no, not at all

Hi Simon,

A few where I have note of the reg. numbers:

VMV 77S (now YGW 543S)

WGU 777S

BJW 464T

DGX 124T

GFH 345V

JMV 945V

MMY 679W

LKR 629W

JYJ 222W

WJN 360W

OLY 405W (not 100% sure regarding this being a Centaur)

There are about six or seven others I can think of but not the reg. numbers at the moment - will see if I can dig out any more details, commission numbers etc.

Is your car ex-GFH 345V, or are there two green Centaurs with towbars?

How much info. did your friend get from the previous owner of the red car? I have a few photographs which were sent but not sure if these were passed across.

Interesting to see which cars you have listed - how many 1900s or Manta versions?

Hi KAA

Yup my car is GFH345V, although I'm not planning on doing a Phil Scrivener and owning it twice.

I've got 6 1900 versions, 2 of which were exported, YGW 543S now here and WJN360W, which was Manta based and now living in Norway along with KGN753T, and the ever elusive LIJ9716 which comes up as being registered in 08/76, predating VMV/YGW  and KGN by almost a year, so not sure what's going on there, unless Crayford made 3 cars

I'm not sure how much stuff came over with Mikes car, it has a history file, I'll give him a call this evening.

As for commission numbers I've only got 25, 65, 68 and 73, so any more would be greatly appreciated, they don't run consecutive to the date of first reg so I can't really take a guess at them from reg date details sadly, and the whole number system for UK plates makes sorting that way difficult, the list from Richard has the exact reg date, any I've added only have the month and year because the DVLA changed their website.

Cars worthy of note from my hazy memory of back then are GUF135V as the reg number caused much amusement to the young me and BCV205T that dad brought home one night before it was to go out to the customer and our neighbour set light to his garage causing a bit of a mad panic.

Any pictures at all would be great so I can link them to the rest of the data, I've got 14 cars so far. If you have any showing the dashboard sticker that went between the air vents on the passenger side would be even better as I'm going to get some reproduction ones made up

In the early 90's I used to see a Sapphire Blue Centaur running around Bridge of Weir in Renfrewshire on a regular basis. Looked to be in very nice condition back then, however, no idea if it still survives.

If it was AOH272T it's still going and mint :thumbup

I've got pretty much all the ones that show up on google, I'm not sure if the Jersey one was originally registered in Jersey or imported later.
The wine one is the infamous BCV205T I mentioned earlier, lovely colour, just a shame they were a cheapskate and stuck with the Rostyles ;)

Just spoken to the old owner of the above car. Its reg was DPL145T, and was originally white. Now gone to the big yard in the sky, but parts of her will live on.

I don't suppose he knows what number it was?

They had a sticker in the glovebox, although it was just a paper one used for address labels, probably long lost over the years

An old member on here, Kev Finny, bought it about 20 years ago from down London way. I remember going with him to bring it up to the Midlands on a trailer, as it was a non-runner.

Kev sold it on as a project to another member, Graham Taylor, who owned it for a few years before passing it over to his brother, Jim. Who has just sold it to Mick Maher as a parts bin.

We still have number 75 but it is in a bad way.

Think of a rusty manta, then think of one that has had a  roof chopped off for 30 years

see my post on breaking centaur

We have a brand new hood for sale if you know anyone who is interested in it. Made by " the don interiors "

Oh he's here now B)

I'm still working on the SWMBO about the hood, does it have the press studs for the tonneau cover?

Do you know what the original reg was?, or at least the date of first reg, I can then mark it off on the database as an ex centaur, beautiful blue plumage

Looking at the car it was originally green.  Then painted red and the manta parts added. We have the original reg at the unit. I will check.

The hood is brand new and checked by Robbie Stintson at the vboa. It does not have any fittings but does come with a letter regarding how difficult it was to find a certain part that is included separately.

It has a 2.0s engine and 5 speed box
