I think the only holes Rob has time for these days are the ones in his Manta ;)  Anyway Rob, I get up at seven to take the dog for a walk, then come back to have a check on the forum, ask Chris if he has my carb down in the shop, Please.

Not long now Rob, reckon you should finish with time to spare! How much crap did you get in your eyes refitting that tank

So much crap! The tank might be nice and shiny but nothing else under there is!

Worth it though, first time that tank's been in the car in ten years. Bit of stonechip underneath and she'll be right.

I've spent my evening removing most of the rest of the braking system. At some point the previous owner has had everything modified to take what look like stainless braided hoses off a motorbike, but as it's been sat so long most of the fittings underneath are badly corroded. It looks like I'll end up re-making most of the solid pipes just to get them right for the standard flexi hoses.

So all I've got left to do are the solid pipes, all three flexis, front calipers, rear wheel cylinders, then flush out any old fluid and bleed it all up. Easy peasy...

Rear wheel cylinders done.

Solid brake lines done.

Rear flexi done.

Front calipers with new pads, pins and clips done.

Waiting for the (hopefully) correct front flexis to arrive, then I can bleed the system out and see if it's leaking from anywhere. Feels weird spending so much time on bits that only the MOT tester's gonna see, but at least I'll know it's done and it's not gonna kill me the first time I hit the pedal!

Sorry ladies and germs, I've just thrown in the towel in my race for Billing. It's so close I can smell it, in fact the plan for tonight was to clean up the earths and get the lights working then chuck some petrol in and see if the tank leaked. Unfortunately the rear lights are being problematic, nothing from either rear indicator, no hazards and a brake light that only works when the tail lights are off. It's annoying and I know it's an earth fault somewhere, but it's been so long since I did this sort of work I can't remember where all the earths on a Manta are. Two behind the rear light clusters, two behind the headlights, what else am I missing?

Looks like I'll be at Billing in the "modern daily", my mk3 Cav SRi.

You either need a multimeter or a simple test lamp, then you could see how far along the wires the electricity is getting.

I have got one of the big square type batteries with spring terminals held onto a small plank with a large hose clip, a small bulb jammed into a hole in the plank wires soldered on to the battery and bulb and crocodile clips on the end of the wires, one wire being very long so it will reach the full length of a car, very crude but quick to make and it has helped me track down many an electical gremlin.

It does sound like the rear light cluster is the route of the trouble, just a case of cleaning every contact, check that the rear light/brake light is the right type of bulb with the double filament the right way round.

As for earths i think you are right, two by the rear lights, two by the headlight and i can't remember if there are one of two earths on the dashboard metal brace, but i would guess that other things in and around the dashboard would not be working if these earths weren't making contact.

There are one or two other earths that are specific to the item they are with, i think the wiper motor has a dedicated earth for instance.

Don't forget to check the major earths from the engine and to the bodyshell by the battery.

Apart from the lights how much more is there to check?? because if this is the only problem you can reach the finnish line no problem, keep trying, you have this weekend and if you stay off the beer (i know, I know, it will be hard but just tell yourself that you will make up for it next weekend !!) you can throw yourself at the Manta with a clear head,

GO ON, keep pushing we'd love you to join the 'here in a Manta at last gang' Messers Collier, Abbott, Jack and Shug, (YES SHUG !!! how many years has that A Series been on the verge of getting to Billing ??)

So chin up (you have got a chin under all that hair??) one big push and we'll see you and your Manta at Billing.

May have been a little hasty last night. Since it wasn't going to make the MOT which I had provisionally booked for this morning, I had a bit of a fiddle with it this morning instead. After much messing with earths and getting nowhere I borrowed the lights out of my coupe and hey presto!

Off to get some petrol and see if it leaks..
