Brackets and lights ready for assembly.

Phonepics14710022.jpg

Headlights fitted and now working after replacing the rotten wiring.

Mantaapics007.jpg

Fitted replacement ignition lock and stearing colum switch that i got from Adie at Billing who was selling Manta A parts at very reasonable prices to club members, thanks Adie. Just a few more electrical faults to sort out then the welding starts.

Also found a new set of front indicators in the spares that came with the car as the original ones had dissolved.

I have been busy with the A over the last few weeks, first job was replacing the rotten fuse box.

Betsy-y-coed2010102.jpg

Betsy-y-coed2010100.jpg

Fitted a six way blade type box inside the original housing and now most of the electrics is ok.

AseriesBits004.jpg

Next was the antifreeze and found all the heater pipes blocked.

21810102.jpg

Replaced them all with some new silicon hoses and flushed the system out.

Next the small bit of welding that always turns into alot of welding. :o

welding088.jpg

Not as bad as my Exclusive was and the near side dose not look so bad.

Chassis rails next

Started on replacing the chassis rails and jacking point.

mantaresto006.jpg

mantaresto007.jpg

New jacking points came in at 190 euros for a pair, so i had a crack at making them.

mantaresto045.jpg

Got the big bolt out ot the chassis rail after alot of swearing :o

mantaresto079.jpg

Then made three sections to repair the chassis rail.

mantaresto036.jpg

Finished that bit.

mantaresto075.jpg

Moved on to the back wheel arch looking for the seatbelt mounting points and found that it was fiberglassed in place

Mick, I'd stop taking pictures if I were you mate. The more pictures you take, the more the car seems to be rusting.

Good luck with the restoration. I'm sure it will be a cracker once it's finished.

Cheers mate ,the bad bits are realy bad but there are alot of very good bits. Removed the front and rear screens yesterday and there was only a couple of very minor rust spots under the rubbers ,also i have now got some new inner wing repair panels so i will be cutting out all the rust on the last few photos :D

Good to see you taking the car right back Mick its the only way to do one properly, looks like all the typical rust spots are there but have been well covered up over time. Will be a cracking car when ur finished, One thing I found the welding skills get well honed with the A series lol

Looks like some good work going into saving this A . Might just cut and paste your pics as I am sure I will be looking at similar rot when I start my TE replica.

I spent some time looking through projects for pictures of inner wings ,so hope this helps you.

sills144.jpg

Below is what is left after a day with the angle grinder.

assssssss197.jpg

It looked like the sill had been welded over the original one and so i was not too surprised to see the car had 4 sills

sills237.jpg

Old sill and very old sill.

Another pile of rust after starting on the A again.

abitts217.jpg

It was very rusty around the lower rear quarter and inner wheel arch.

abitts218.jpg

Started the welding on the inner sill.

abitts219.jpg

Ready for some more welding.

abitts221.jpg

You can see on the original jacking point was not made from solid tube as it has opened up

Isn't that top photo of some bits of a Subaru Mick...?

Joking apart, it's amazing how it keeps throwing up these little surprises. Who'd have thought something that looked so good could

be so rotten.

But I'm certain it won't be for much longer the way you're going.
