You can use the xe oil stick. I filled engine with 4.5 litres of oil and remarked stick. Never had an issue.

Set crank on 10 degree after tdc check cam has dowel top centre look on dizzy there is a small groove set centre of rotor arm in line with this. Set up timing light and turn key.

Don't know if it will help but ensure you have the correct cable fitted if using 1.8 gearbox. There are three different cables dictating the inner cable length.
