Manta Interior Fan Upgrades

I've been making upgraded interior fans for customers cars for a while now and have finally got around to making a few spares.

The standard manta fans are not really that good at shifting air even when working right. When they're not working right (which is quite often) its either from a seized bearing on the shaft or a worn bearing (they are brass/bronze bushes on a steel shaft) that then screams like a banshee.

So i use a more modern fans from a mk3 Polo along with the resistor from the same car.

This offers 4 speeds and i connect speeds 2 and 4 to give a nice range. The full speed is much better than the original manta so actually demists the screen.

They fit in the same place as the original and retain the standard plug/wiring. No modifications are needed to the car

Right i've borrowed an A heater box and fan setup, the polo motor won't work with it as its too long.

I'm going to have a search around at the breakers yard for a shorter motor from something and see what i can make from it.

Mounting the motor in place looks harder to do but i have a couple of ideas to try, will let everyone know when i've managed it.

Just to follow up, fitted the upgraded fan over the Easter break, direct-fit replacement took me less than 20 minutes. And, it works really well, better than the original one ever did - no more horrible squealing and I can actually feel it pushing air up to the windscreen.. Luxury! :)

penyghent: No positive progress on the A fan i'm affraid, i've looked at several modern motors but cannot find one small enough to fit in the A heater box.

I'm off to a larger scrap yard this weekend so will have a look at a few more motors.

Robah: I'm out of polo fans at the moment but will be picking a few up at the weekend so will let you know.
