i am currently undergoing a manta b v6 conversion. just wondering what gear box i could use so that it will be a cable speedo andcable clutch, also my manta was a manual so what pedal/pedal box will be best suited? i have a hole omega donar, or would it be possible to use the gearbox an some how fit the dash from the omega into the manta and what electrical components can i just take off the wiring to simplify it all would be great if any one could help....

You can either use a manta 1.8 box which will then run a speedo and clutch cable or use your omega box and convert your pedle box to work with hydraulic clutch

You can run an omega clutch and get an adaptor that converts to a cable speedo

1.8 will fit but if the V6 is a new build or modified it will destroy the 1.8 gearbox, I would be using a MV6 gearbox or a type 9 gearbox to handle the torque and power

Well the easy option is to use the 1.8 box as this will bolt to the V6 without a problem and has a clutch cable and speedo cable. Problem with this will be any hard driving will cause the internals to start to fail, think Chris is on his second set of internals on his A Series.

Next you could look for a 2.0l Carlton box. Again this has a cable clutch and speedo cable and if you can find a vey late one then the gear ratios are the same as the Omega box.
Problem with this box is the bellhousing is larger so you will need to raise the trans tunnel which could put you into the hands of the SAV due to the fact you have made a change to the orginal body shell (lights blue touch paper). Might also need to have a hybrid prop made aswell

Next is the Omega box. For this you will need to either convert to a clutch cable or modify the pedal box to take a master cylinder. The Omega box has no drive on the output shaft for a cable drive to fit but if you can find the driving and driven gears from a Carlton box then you could stip the Omega box and fit these parts, if not your then looking at running an electric speedo head so you'll need the correct pickup on the box to drive the speedo and you then need a speedo to fit in the instrument panel, you'll aslo need to have a hybrid prop made with the Omega front and Manta rear.
For this box you will also need to raise the trans tunnel. and for both this and the carlton box the gear linkage will nee to be shortened.

Last option would be a Ford Type 9 with a 16v Bellhousing conversion, the 16v redtop and V6 have the same bolt pattern. This is a common conversion so picking up the correct conversion parts from a Rally specialist shouldn't be a problem. I don't know alot about these boxes but i think you might need to move the hole for the shifter back a bit, have a new rear trans mount made and a propshaft.

So on reflection the 1.8 box is the easy option but if you intend to blast it up the strip or thrash it then you'll  need a good supply of hard to find transmissions

Cheers
Andy

2nd 2.264
3rd 1.434
4th 1.000
5th 0.842
Reverse     3.748

Getrag 240 Manta 1.8
1st 3.717
2nd   2.019
3rd   1.434
4th        1.000
5th    0.804
Reverse 3.534

R28  Omega Hydraulic

1st   3.808
2nd   2.106
3rd       1.336
4th   1.000
5th                           0.814

1.8 Getrag Manta box is fine for normal driving, but as said above, if used in anger will strip 2nd gear syincrose. I also found that it is a little to revy in 1st and 2nd.

On ratios above, manta box is taller in first and second than others.

ok so im going to go with the exsisting omega gear box ive modified the tunnel its all in, what i was wondering is where you have the electronic pickup for the speedo i thought maybe you could convert a cable onto it some how the hydro clutch shouldnt be a problem but is tight if any one has done this an have any pictures that would be a great help ie where the master cylinder will go ect thanks.

More or less on your own with this as the only V6's i know of have used the Manta 1.8 Box. The Omega picks up its speedo signal via the abs sensors . There is a plug in the back of the box where the cable would have fitted as the casings are the same as the Carlton, problem is the is no drive gear on the outshaft of the box so to convert to a speedo cable you will need the driving & driven speedo gears from a Carlton Box. You'll then need to strip the Omega box down and fit the parts.
Other proble you'll have with that is there are three different driven gears which will affect the speedo reading if you fit the wrong one.

I've heard that a BMW Speedo head will fit the dash although i've not seen it done and you can then use the BMW speedo pick up to run the head but as i say only hear about this not seen it so do some research first

As for the clutch you might be best using the Omega Master Cylinder, I would suggest getting a complete pedal box from a scrap Manta and set it up on the bench first otherwise you are working in the dark and upside down all the time. and may i suggest using a linkage of some sort instead of mounting the cylinder direct to the pedal, remember the Manta pedal pulls but the master cylinder needs to be pushed.

Another think to look at is the gear shift linkage as the Omega set up far to long and also the prop will need to be modified

What are you doing for the exhaust system, inlet manifold and sump some pics would be nice

Cheers
Andy

or you could just use a sat nav system that displays your speed and then the gearbox / speedo issue is no more!!

Two of my Cavaliers have passed three MOTs at different garages between them without working speedos... Maybe that's just me being lucky though!

New MOT rule that comes into efect tomorrow:

Speedometer

The car will fail if a speedometer is not fitted, is incomplete, inoperative, has a dial glass broken/missing or cannot be illuminated.

However, VOSA, the government agency responsible for the MOT, has indicated that 'failures' relating to the new test items will be treated as 'advisories' in the first three months. This means that if you have any of the following problems with your car you've got until the first MOT renewal date after 1 April 2012 to get it fixed.

Get aftermarket electronic speedo, magnetic pickup on prop flange. Clutch master cyl fits in space, basically put eye on end of pedal where cable hook goes, then weld mount plate and gussets into pedal box and cylinder points backwards towards driver. Leave box alone, don't touch that other than fit spacer behind slave cyl to get clutch to work. I am getting some more kits sorted for this in new year

Ps good reply mantaray

Ps I also manufacture quickshift to fit omega box to manta or ascona
