Brown Job Posted May 14, 2009 Share Posted May 14, 2009 Does anyone know how to remove the gearstick on a manta b to replace the gearstick gaitor More than one way, I find easiest is to take off the centre console (use a bit of coathanger wire bent at the end to flip out the screw covers, don't lose 'em). Put the console somewhere where you won't tread on it/someone drive over it (bitter experience). Lift up the gearlever gaiter at the bottom, grovel on the floor peering up the hollow inner end of the gearlever. You can see the looped end of a kid of thickish wire circlip. Use a small-bladed screwdriver or similar to flick the circlip out KEEPING YOUR HAND ROUND THE AREA SO IT DOESN'T FLICK AWAY AND GET LOST FOREVER. A bit of fiddle but not bad. Never had much sucess with circlip pliers for that job. Put the circlip safe, not in the pocket with your hanky so it gets pulled out and falls down the drain. Gearlever will now pull up and away on a steady pull straight up, it's fixed over a kind of rubber doofer to stop it waggling. If it's a bit stuck, try twisting slightly and pulling to break the metal/rubber seal. Change gaiter. To refit, best to use soft soap on the rubber doofer. Force the gearlever all the way down, hard as poss. You need to get the circlip ring clear of the rubber doofer. Stick the circlip back on, using the screwdriver blade and not sticking it through your hand in the process. Make sure it's on properly or one day the gearlever will come off in your hand - oops. Refit console. While the console's off, you can retrieve all the things that fell into the handbrake cutout over the last 30 years.
